Immersed In Music’s 2019 summer camp options include multiple choices of vocal, drumming, band, and sound engineering options. Also, new this year is a music blogging one-half day camp.

 

Immersed In Music (IIM) is proud to announce its Summer Camps schedule for 2019. All camps will take place at Londonderry School, 1800 Bamberger Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110.

We are offering an “Early Bird” discount on most camps if we receive your registration before May 1, 2019. Refer to each camp’s description for specific information and pricing. Let’s Sing!

… Get your burgeoning singer up and running with vocal basics in an empowering, fun atmosphere. Proper breath work, age appropriate beginner technique, song structure basics, working with melody and touching on some harmony work.

During the week:

  • Learn, sing, and practice 3 traditional songs
  • Learn, sing, and practice 2 basic musical theatre songs
  • Each singer gets to pick one individual song to sing on Friday
  • Enjoy karaoke time with each other
  • Build the beginning steps toward strength and pitch without strain

Dates: June 17-21
Cash price: $170.00 before May 1 or $200.00 after April 30

FUNdamental Drumming 1

… Building the foundation of a good drummer from the beginning through using hands-on activities and guidance. This course is designed for anyone age 8 and above who wants to learn how to play along with their favorite song.

Level 1 covers:

  • Kit setup and teardown – understanding the equipment and drummer individuality
  • Basic hand and foot technique – how to properly hold the stick and hit
  • Timing and tempo – finding and keeping the beat within your favorite song
  • Simple charting and notation – how to read and write musical drum score
  • Playing along with a song – simple beats to fit a multitude of songs

Dates: June 17-21 and/or July 8-12

Sing It Out!

… For singers who have some vocal experience and deep curiosity to improve. We will dig into the basics of contemporary vocal work, proper warm up & cool down routine, why shortcuts don’t work, and how to achieve a connected sound without pushing or straining.

During the week:

  • Get a deeper understanding of each singer’s vocal registers
  • Learn, sing, and practice 2 basic musical theatre song
  • Each singer gets to pick one individual song to sing on Friday
  • Enjoy karaoke time with each other
  • Learn time tested exercises students can use every day for proper technique and alignment

Dates: June 24-28

Music Blogging with a Purpose

…Music lovers with a passion for blogging and journalism can be fulfilled, even if they have little to no background. This week-long afternoon camp will inspire students to pursue a hobby or even a potential career highlighting musicians, music, and concerts, by writing their own reviews and sharing them through IIM online publications. Students will publish their reviews at the end of camp.

Highlights of the camp include:

  • Why blogging is important
  • Ways to incorporate social media marketing into your blog
  • Researching artists to review
  • Creating clever ways to blog
  • Writing opinion pieces and sharing for group feedback
  • Learning how to post blogs online

Dates: June 17-21

Introduction to Performance Sound Systems

… A beginner’s guide to having a good foundation in the whys and hows of setting up a Performance Sound System. This course is designed for anyone who is looking to tap into their inner live sound engineer!

Highlights of this camp include:

  • Establishing concepts and procedures for small ensemble sound systems
  • Learn the functions and operation of the components needed to set up for your show
  • From microphones and stands to front of house loudspeakers and monitors
  • Amplifiers and mixers and electrical power (and lights)
  • Wires and cables and snakes – Oh My!
  • Tie it all together and make it work for a show performed by your fellow campers

Young Rockers Summer Camp

… Perfect for the beginner musician or any interested child, even if they have no musical background. This week-long camp will place the students in a band environment where they can learn proper techniques of their preferred instrument, experiment with other instruments, and work with other kids at their own ability level. Students will learn music of their choice and perform it on Friday afternoon for class parents and camp students.

Each child is responsible for bringing their own lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Note: Londonderry is a nut-free school. Please let us know if your child has any other food allergies.

Recording at Home – Garage Bands and Basement Tapes Summer Camp

… Are you looking to do recording at home, either for yourself, your own band, or a client? This camp is designed for exactly that purpose! It’s easy and fun when you have the right instructor, and Jay Kirssin is among the best in the area. Sign up now and get ready to be your own at home sound engineer!

This camp will cover loads of practical information and plenty of hands on experience:

  • First: a goal, a plan, pre-production, practice, and rehearsal
  • Hardware doesn’t have to be hard
  • Computers, interfaces, microphones, and headphones
  • Software – Study, Select and Set up
  • Workflow, multiple screens, compatibility, backups
  • You don’t need plugins
  • Press the red button and lay down some tracks – with your fellow campers
  • Edit your work and listen, listen, listen
  • Mix with your ears, not with your eyes (baby steps)
  • Create a final version and send it into the world

Rockers Summer Camp

… In this camp, students will play in a band, learn songs of the band’s choice, and perform a concert of those songs. This fun filled week is a great opportunity for current students to experience a new band, and to make sure they keep their “chops” up. For students who have not yet been in Rockers, we will need to set up a time for an assessment so we can place your child in the correct band to maximize their experience.

Mix with Your Ears (the Whole Deal) Summer Camp

… Mixing is a special skill that depends on lots of critical listening. Whether live or in the studio, there is much to learn in both theory and practice in order to get the best sound for your audience.

This camp is geared to the older students who want to get their hands on the equipment that matters, as well as explore the whys and hows of live and studio sound engineering:

  • Live or in the studio – what’s the difference
  • Learn your frequencies – critical listening
  • High pass everything
  • Signal flow versus procedure
  • Unity gain – those numbers matter!
  • Set phasers on coherent

FUNdamental Drumming 2 Summer Camp

… Expanding the foundation and thinking of a drummer into a more rounded and versatile musician. This course is designed for anyone age 8 and above who has completed this year’s FUNdamental Drumming Level 1 course, and for the intermediate level drummer.   • Understanding time signature – not just your basic 4/4 anymore
  • Beat recognition – finding the correct beat pattern within a song
  • Hand and foot independence – separation of limb coordination
